I can’t disagree with your point here, but I do want to add that I think all true nerds secretly love that they are suddenly cool and accepted, and sometimes even imitated, for the same things that everyone ridiculed them about years ago. I know I’m pretty happy when people seek me out to answer questions about the newest comic book movie or random Star Trek trivia. I’d been preparing my whole life for this.
And while I do sometimes feel a bit angry that people these days throw nerdiness around like it’s the new subculture, I’m pretty happy to see kids whose lives would have been terrible back then do fairly well for themselves now. Probably a good few of the popular kids dressed as nerds would have been miserable a decade or two ago, but didn’t get edged out early for liking unpopular things like we did. That’s got to be a step in the right direction.
